Cyclone Nisarga: Timing, Duration, Speed & Areas To Be Affected; Here's All You Need To Know

Cyclone Nisarga is heading to Maharashtra coast and is supposed to make landfall in the afternoon. Here's what you need to know about the cyclone.

New Delhi: After super cyclone Amphan it is now the turn of cyclone Nisarga which is going to hit Maharashtra coast today in the afternoon. It has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, it's 200km away from Mumbai. The cyclone is moving northeasterly towards Alibag in Raigad.

Here's all you need to know about landfall timing, duration, speed & areas to be affected

  • Severe Cyclonic  Nisarga will make landfall near Alibaug, about 100 km from Mumbai. It is considered to be not as intense Amphan and will be a category 2 storm
  • According to India Meteorological Department (IMD )it will cross Maharashtra coast between Harihareshwar & Daman, very close to Alibaug between 1 pm to 4 pm
  • Heavy rainfall and wind with speed up to 110 kilometre per hour - gusting up to 120 kmph has been predicted by the IMD.
  • The diameter of the eye of the cyclone is about 65 km as observed through Radar. According to the IMD, the diameter has decreased during the past hour indicating intensification of the system. Hence wind speed has increased from 85-95 kmph to 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph,
  • 40 teams of National Disaster Response Force have been deployed in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa as Cyclone Nisarga is intensifying.
  • The cyclone is expected to weaken by midnight and by the morning tomorrow the cyclone will turn into a  depression
  • There is a ban on movement of people in Mumbai and it will remain in place till Thursday noon. Those found violating the rule will be fined with Rs 10,000. Air and train travel will also face disruption.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also looked into the situation and had tweeted on Tuesday 'Took stock of the situation in the wake of cyclone conditions in parts of India’s western coast. Praying for everyone’s well-being. I urge people to take all possible precautions and safety measures.'
  • Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday appealed to the people of the state to "stay indoors".
