Nirbhaya Case: Women Activist Group Wants Live Telecast Of Convicts' Execution

Named as Bhumata Brigade, the group believes that live telecast of the execution of all four convicts of Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case will strengthen citizens' believe on jurisdiction and instill fear among the criminals.

New Delhi: With less than 10 days left for the conviction of four convicts of Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case, a women activist group has demanded a live telecast of execution of all four culprits asserting that the move will send a strong message of justice and women security in the country. Named as Bhumata Brigade, the group believes that live telecast of the execution will strengthen citizens' believe on jurisdiction and will instill fear among the criminals. Bhumata Brigade is the same organisation that fought for women entry in the sanctum sanctorum of popular Shani Shingnapur temple in Maharashtra. Speaking about the same, president of Bhumata Brigade Tripti Desai said, "One rape happens in every 15 minutes in the country. From a long time, death penalty for rape has not been implemented. Girls of two and four years are being raped. Women of the country feel unsafe. Live telecast of the execution will build people's faith on jurisdiction and instill fear among those who think about such heinous crime." Flagging concern over the reputation of India in terms of women security level, Desai said that no one would ever think about doing such gruesome crime after this live execution. Supreme Court will hear the curative petitions filed by two convicts, on death row, in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case on January 14. A five-judge bench comprising Justices NV Ramana, Arun Mishra, Rohinton Fali Nariman, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan will hear the curative petitions filed by Vinay Sharma and Mukesh, who moved the apex court on Thursday. Mukesh filed the plea, after fellow convict Vinay Sharma moved the court. A trial court here, while issuing death warrants against the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case on Tuesday observed that "despite being afforded sufficient time and opportunity", the convicts didn't exercise their legal remedies. The court fixed January 22 and 7 a.m. as the date and time for execution of the four convicted persons in the case. After a 23-year-old woman was gangraped and tortured on December 16, 2012, leading to her death, all six accused were arrested and charged with sexual assault and murder. One of the accused was a minor and appeared before a juvenile justice court, while another accused committed suicide in Tihar Jail. The four convicts were sentenced to death by a trial court in September 2013, and the verdict confirmed by the Delhi High Court in March 2014 and upheld in May 2017 by the Supreme Court, which also dismissed their review petitions.
