Kerala Lottery: Face-Value Prizes Scrapped, New Wins Range From Rs 200 To Rs 5000 – Details Here

Currently, around 1.5 lakh people in Kerala depend on the lottery sector for their livelihood and this restructuring is expected to boost participation in the state-run lottery system.

The Kerala government will discontinue the practice of awarding lottery prizes equal to the ticket’s face value, starting the first week of June, Finance Minister KN Balagopal announced on Monday. The change comes in response to feedback from agents and distributors, who pointed out that such "break-even" prizes offered no meaningful incentive for participants. The Minister made the statement while speaking at the state-level distribution ceremony for educational scholarships for children of Lottery Welfare Fund members.

Kerala Lottery Prize Amount Restructuring

To offset the removal of the face-value prize—previously awarded when a Rs 50 ticket won Rs 50—the state plans to increase the number of Rs 5,000 prizes and reintroduce Rs 2,000 and Rs 200 prize categories, as per a report on Manorama.

This restructuring is expected to boost excitement and participation in the state-run lottery system.

Currently, around 1.5 lakh people in Kerala depend on the lottery sector for their livelihood. The state government spends Rs 43 crore annually on welfare schemes supporting lottery workers and their families.

As part of the scholarship distribution event, 573 students—children of members enrolled in the Lottery Welfare Fund—received financial assistance amounting to Rs 13.66 lakh. The event was presided over by Ambalappuzha MLA H Salam.

Balagopal reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting the welfare of lottery workers while enhancing the overall appeal of Kerala’s lottery ecosystem.
