Nepal PM Prachanda-Modi Meeting, Rahul Gandhi To Visit US: What To Expect This Week Ahead

From Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal's first bilateral visit abroad after assuming office in 2022 to Rahul Gandhi's six-day US trip — here's what to expect in The Week Ahead.

As we move on to the month of June this week, begin your Monday morning with ABP Live's curation of top news events expected to take place in the coming seven days.

After a tumultous week that saw the Opposition parties and the BJP-led NDA at daggers drawn over the inauguration of the new Parliament building, the week we are likely to see more activity towards a mega meeting of regional leaders in Patna, which will be hosted by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar.

On the diplomatic front, Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' is set to visit India this week in what will be his first bilateral visit abroad after assuming office in December 2022. Another visit that will be keenly watched will be that of Rahul Gandhi to the US -- it is sure to create some hullabaloo in India.

Read on as we try to decode the news and also the newsmakers in the next seven days help you understand what is likely to happen in the week ahead. Here are the biggest developments expected to play out this week.

Nepal PM Prachanda On Four-Day Visit To India On His First Overseas Trip

In what is being seen a diplomatic win for India, Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' has chosen India for his first official visit abroad. This comes amid a tussle between India and China to exert its strategic influence in Nepal.

It also must be noted that Prachanda had chosen China as his first port of call after becoming PM for the first time in 2008.

During his visit, Dahal will pay a courtesy call on President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Prachanda will hold delegation-level talks with Modi on June 1.

Dahal said he would focus on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new areas of cooperation between Nepal and India, The Kathmandu Post reported. A slew of agreements and MoUs related to trade, chemical fertiliser plant etc are likely to be signed.

On its part, the MEA said, "The visit continues the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between India and Nepal in furtherance of our 'Neighbourhood First' policy."

All Eyes On Rahul Gandhi's Visit To United States

Rahul Gandhi's six-day trip to the US will be closely watched back in India, especially after the slugfest witnessed after his UK trip earlier this year.

Gandhi is likely to address the Indian diaspora at the Madison Square Garden and also deliver a speech at Stanford University.

Indian Overseas Congress chairperson Sam Pitroda has said Gandhi is scheduled to visit San Francisco, Washington DC and New York. During his trip, Gandhi is likely to address two public meetings with Indian Americans, meet lawmakers at Capitol Hill and members of think tanks, interact with university students and meet Wall Street executives.

The visit comes months after Gandhi's visit to the UK, where his remarks alleging that the structures of Indian democracy were under attack and there was a "full-scale assault" on the country’s institutions, created a storm in India and saw protests in Parliament by BJP members.

The BJP had accused Gandhi of maligning India on foreign soil and seeking foreign interventions.

Date Of Mega Meeting Of Opposition Leaders Likely To Be Finalised

The date of a mega gathering of leaders of Opposition parties to finalise a roadmap to form an alliance of non-BJP parties may be announced this week.

Last week, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi and the leaders said a decision on a meeting would be taken in a day or two.

During the meeting, Kumar held nearly an hour-long "extensive" deliberations over the upcoming brainstorming by top Opposition bigwigs to chalk out a joint strategy for 2024 Lok Sabha elections in a bid to halt the Modi juggernaut.

Congress leader KC Venugopal said "a vast majority of Opposition parties will attend" the proposed mega Opposition meeting.

Arvind Kejriwal Likely To Meet Kharge Despite AAP-Congress Differences

Amid the AAP's ongoing face-off with the Centre over the control of administrative services in the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had last week sought time to meet Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi for their support to oppose the ordinance.

The meeting may take place this week despite several Congress leaders strongly opposing extending any support to AAP on the issue.

The AAP has said that rejecting the proposed legislation, which will brought in Parliament to replace the ordinance, will be a litmus test for the opposition unity. The support of the Congress in the Rajya Sabha will be crucial for AAP to defeat the legislation.

Monsoon Onset Over Kerala This Week

Monsoon, the lifeblood of the Indian economy, will arrive in Kerala on June 4 amid a slight delay. The southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala on June 1. Last year, the monsoon reached Kerala on May 29.

For this year, the IMD has forecast normal rainfall this monsoon season, barring the northwestern region, which includes Rajasthan. However, most parts of the country will witness deficient showers in June, except some pockets.

The weather office said rainfall during the June-September period is likely to be 96 per cent of the long-term average.
