Myanmar: 8 Indian Nationals Rescued From Fake Jobs Offer Scam, Embassy Issues Advisory

As many as 19 Indian nationals have been rescued from scam compounds in Myawaddy, east of capital Naypyidaw along the Thailand border, over two days, said the Indian Embassy in a statement.

Eight Indian nationals were rescued from a job offer scam in Hpa Lu region of Myanmar's Myawaddy, said the Indian Embassy on Sunday. The citizens have been handed over safely to Myanmar police/immigration, said the Embassy in a statement, and issued an advisory flagging the fake job racket targetting Indian youth. 

"8 Indian nationals, victims of a scam centre in Hpa Lu, Myawaddy, were rescued and handed over safely to Myanmar police/immigration yesterday. Support of Myanmar authorities and local assistance was crucial. We thank them, and strongly reiterate our advisory on fake job rackets," said the Indian Embassy in Yangon in a post on X. 

As many as 19 Indian nationals have been rescued from scam compounds in Myawaddy, east of capital Naypyidaw along the Thailand border, over two days, said the Embassy. 

Of the 19 victims, 11 were in Shwe Ko Ko and 8 in Hpa Lu. 

"Due to ongoing armed conflict in the area, further complicated by crime syndicates, we strongly advise all to guard against their job offers," flagged the Emabssy. 

The Embassy issued an advisory, in continuation to its earlier advisories informing about a spike in the incidents of Indian nationals falling victim to the international crime syndicates active in the Myawaddy region on Myanmar-Thailand border. 

The advisory urged the citizens not to take any such job offers without consulting the respective Indian Embassies. It also alerted about Hpa Lu, south of Myawaddy, as a new area where most of the Indian victims are being trafficked into, via Thailand after being recruited from India as well as from countries like Malaysia and UAE etc. 

"In view of the above, it is reiterated that Indian nationals should not accept such job offers floated through social media platforms or other unverified sources. Indian nationals are advised to check/verify credentials of foreign employers through the Indian Embassy located in that country," the advisory noted.
