No Decision On Weekend Curfew, PM Modi & CM Uddhav To Chair Covid Review Meet Today: Mumbai Mayor

Mumbai recorded as many as 20,181 fresh cases of Coronavirus in the last 24 hours, a fresh record for the city, while 13 more patients succumbed to the disease. 

Mumbai: With Mumbai contributing the most to Maharashtra's daily Covid-19 caseload, Mayor Kishori Pednekar on Friday said that the state government has taken no decision to impose weekend curfew in the city as of now.

Mumbai recorded as many as 20,181 fresh cases of Coronavirus in the last 24 hours, a fresh record for the city, while 13 more patients succumbed to the disease. 

When asked about imposing more curbs in the city to contain the spread of Covid-19, Padnekar said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a review meeting with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray later in the day.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a review meeting (via video conferencing) with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray this evening on the COVID-19 situation," news agency ANI quoted the Mayor as saying. 

"Chief Minister thinks that no lockdown should be imposed. But, people are still not serious and are not wearing masks. People must follow all COVID19 SOPs. Today, there could be a decision on seating capacity to be allowed for restaurants, hotels etc," she added.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra continued its Covid-19 rally as daily cases shot above the 36,000-mark with fatalities again jumping to double-digit figures. The state reported 36,265 cases on Thursday with fatalities increasing from 8 a day earlier to 13 now. 

Of the 36,265 new cases, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region alone accounted for 30,312, infections, while Mumbai city's single-day tally zoomed past the 20,000-mark to 20,181.

After recording 144 Omicron infections on Wednesday, the state logged 79 cases of the new variant on Thursday. 

Mumbai accounts for the maximum cases of Omicron - 565 - followed by 157 in Pune, 63 in Thane, 30 in Nagpur, 18 in Raigad, 10 in Kolhapur, 8 in Satara, 6 in Osmanabad, 4 in Palghar, 3 each in Amravati and Nanded, 2 each in Buldhana, Aurangabad and Sangli, and 1 each in Akola, Latur and Ahmednagar.

Maharashtra's cumulative Covid caseload since the start of the pandemic stands at 67,93,297 cases and 141,594 deaths, while another 65,33,154 have fully recovered till date.
