Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi Declines Central Government Offer To Be Attorney General: Report

Mukul Rohatgi has turned down the proposal of the Central Government to be appointed as the Attorney General for India.

New Delhi: The country's well-known and senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi has turned down the proposal of the Central Government to be appointed as the Attorney General for India, as reported by news agency PTI. Talking to news agency ANI, Rohatgi said that there is no specific reason behind not accepting the proposal of the Government of India, again the proposal has been considered and rejected. Mukul Rohatgi had earlier also held the responsibility of AG in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government between 2014 and 2017.

After Rohatgi, Venugopal was given the responsibility of AG on 15 July 2017. Along with this, he was also given an extension thrice in his tenure. During the recent hearing, he indicated that he would not continue his journey as an AG after the end of the current term. In the year 2020, even after the end of his three-year term, he had expressed his desire to leave the post, but the central government had requested him to continue as AG.

The veteran lawyer has shown up in a few high-profile cases in the apex court as well as high courts the nation over, including the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the peak court which had heard a plea by Zakia Jafri relating to the 2002 Gujarat riots.

He is a senior advocate at the Supreme Court of India and has earlier served as Additional Solicitor General of India.

Rohatgi was set to be appointed as the fourteenth Attorney General of India replacing the incumbent K K Venugopal.
