Milind Deora Quits Congress Amid Speculation Of Joining Eknath Shinde-Led Shiv Sena

Milind Deora announced his resignation from the Congress party and said that he is "ending" his family’s "55-year relationship with the party".

Senior Congress leader Milind Deora on Sunday announced his resignation from the Congress, ending his family’s “55-year long relationship with the party”. This comes as speculation has been rife in political circles that he is likely to join the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, news agency PTI reported. On Saturday, he dismissed speculations about his departure from the grand old party to join the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as "rumours". 

Deora took to X to announce his resignation, “Today marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in my political journey. I have tendered my resignation from the primary membership of Congress, ending my family’s 55-year relationship with the party. 

I am grateful to all leaders, colleagues & karyakartas for their unwavering support over the years.”

On Saturday, Deora, who recently expressed dissatisfaction with the Shiv Sena (UBT) claiming the Mumbai South Lok Sabha constituency, stated to reporters that he is currently in discussions with his supporters.

"I am listening to my supporters...Haven't taken a decision yet," the former Mumbai South MP said when asked if he was chalking out a plan with his supporters, as quoted by PTI.

The faction led by Uddhav Thackeray had asserted its claim to contest the Mumbai South constituency, previously represented by Milind Deora before 2014, in the upcoming general elections. Deora, expressing discontent with this move, issued a video statement last Sunday, warning that if such statements by an "alliance partner" persist, his party may also announce candidates for seats.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) is an alliance partner of the Congress and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) in the Maha Vikas Aghadi.

Deora emphasised that formal discussions on seat-sharing had not been finalised, and pressed against premature claims and counter-claims.
