Measles Outbreak: Toll Reaches 11 As One-Year-Old Child Dies In Mumbai. Case Tally At 220

A measles outbreak has been detected from 21 locations in 10 of Mumbai's 24 civic wards, according to the local civic body's health department bulletin.

With the death of a one-year-old boy on Tuesday, the toll from the measles outbreak in Mumbai reached 11, two of which were outside the city, while 12 more were infected, bringing the total to 220, news agency PTI reported citing the local civic body.

According to a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) health department bulletin, 12 new confirmed cases of measles were discovered in the city, bringing the total to 220.

The number of suspected measles cases increased to 3,378 on Tuesday, with 170 new infections reported.

The one-year-old boy, a resident of Nalasopara (East) in the neighbouring Palghar district, died in a government hospital in Mumbai, according to the report. 

After receiving initial treatment at a private hospital, the child was transferred to the government hospital and experienced respiratory failure, necessitating his placement on a ventilator on Monday.

The patient's condition deteriorated, and he subsequently died. According to the bulletin, the suspected cause of death was "acute respiratory failure in a case of measles with bronchopneumonia."

A measles outbreak has been detected from 21 locations in 10 of Mumbai's 24 civic wards, according to the bulletin.

Patients infected with measles are isolated or admitted to eight hospitals for treatment: Kasturba Hospital, Shivaji Nagar Maternity Home, Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital, Rajawadi Hospital, Shatabdi Hospital, Kurla Bhabha Hospital, Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Hospital, and Seven Hills Hospital.

Meanwhile, at a meeting in the state secretariat in south Mumbai on Tuesday, Maharashtra Health Minister Dr Tanaji Sawant assessed the situation resulting from the measles outbreak.

The conference was attended by state health department officials, BMC officials, and World Health Organization's Dr Meeta Vashi and Dr Arun Gaikwad.
