MEA Issues Advisory Against Travelling To Myanmar's Rakhine Amid Security Concerns

The MEA issued a stern advisory, urging Indian citizens to avoid travel to Myanmar's Rakhine State following recent incidents of violence marking a significant uptick in tensions.

New Delhi: Amidst escalating tensions in Myanmar's Rakhine State, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a stern advisory, urging Indian citizens to avoid travel to the region. The Ministry of External Affairs cited the deteriorating security situation, disruption of means of telecommunications, including landlines, and severe scarcity of essential commodities in Rakhine State.

The MEA advisory stated, "In view of the deteriorating security situation, disruption of means of telecommunications, including landlines, and severe scarcity of essential commodities, all Indian citizens are advised not to travel to the Rakhine State of Myanmar".

Furthermore, MEA also advised the Indian citizens who are in Rakhine State to leave the state immediately.

The advisory follows heightened concerns over the security landscape in Myanmar. The Indian government has expressed apprehension over the "deteriorating" situation in the country, emphasising the need for an early resolution to the conflict and the restoration of peace and stability. India has long advocated for an end to violence and a transition towards an inclusive federal democracy in Myanmar, the MEA stated last week, as per news agency ANI.

The situation in Rakhine State has been volatile, with recent incidents of violence marking a significant uptick in tensions. Last October, three ethnic minority forces launched a coordinated offensive, resulting in the capture of towns and military posts. This offensive has posed a substantial challenge to the ruling Junta, which seized power in Myanmar in 2021.

The recent influx of people from Myanmar into Mizoram along the Indo-Myanmar border further highlights the severity of the situation. Reports indicate that the influx was prompted by airstrikes launched by the Myanmar army in bordering areas, exacerbating tensions in the region.

Myanmar commemorates the third anniversary of the military coup on February 1.
