Man Who Opened Fire During Jahangirpuri Violence Arrested, Says Delhi Police

Sonu alias Imam alias Yunus, a resident of C-Block in Jahangirpuri, has been identified as the suspect, they added.

New Delhi: A 28-year-old man who was seen opening fire during the violence in Delhi's Jahangirpuri area was arrested on Monday, PTI reported.

The accused has been identified as Sonu alias Imam alias Yunus, a resident of C-Block in Jahangirpuri, police said.

"A video was being circulated on social media platforms on Sunday, showing a man in a blue shirt opening fire during the riots in Jahangirpuri. He has been nabbed by the special staff of the northwest district," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Usha Rangnani was quoted by PTI in its report.

On Saturday, clashes erupted between two communities during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in Jahangirpuri, injuring eight police officers and a local.

The prime accused in the violence have been identified as Ansar and Aslam. They have been sent to one-day police custody by a local court on Monday, reported news agency ANI.

Moreover, a 36-year-old man was on Monday arrested for allegedly supplying bottles that were used for pelting during the clash in Jahangirpuri.

Hameed is a scrap dealer who lives in Jahangirpuri. The Delhi Police has so far held 22 people and apprehended two juveniles in connection with the incident.

"During the investigation, one more accused Sheikh Hameed was arrested in connection with the case. During the interrogation, he told police that he had supplied bottles which were used for pelting during the clashes," Rangnani said.

Md Aslam, who fired a bullet that injured a Delhi Police sub-inspector, is included in the total number of arrests made so far in connection with the incident. The accused's pistol was confiscated from his possession during the conduct of the crime.

An FIR was registered on Saturday under Indian Penal Code sections, including 307 (attempt to murder), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 147 (rioting), and provisions of the Arms Act in connection with the incident.

Heavy Police Deployment In Delhi's Jahangirpuri

Officials claimed on Monday that a huge number of security officers, including those from the anti-riot force, had been deployed in the violence-plagued regions of Jahangirpuri in northwest Delhi.

Over 500 police officers and six more police companies have been stationed in the region around the clock, according to a senior official.

"A total of 80 tear gas gun parties and water cannons have been deployed. Drones are also being used in sensitive areas for rooftop surveillance. All senior officers have been instructed to be at the spot to avoid any untoward incident," the officer said, PTI reported.

Speaking to a television news channel, Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana said, "We have deployed adequate force not only in Jahangirpuri but in other areas also. We will use technology for surveillance and are monitoring the situation to make sure that no untoward incident occurs in the future."
