Low-Pressure Area Over Bay Of Bengal And Andaman Sea Likely To Intensify Into Cyclonic Storm On May 10: IMD
The cyclonic storm is likely to move north-northwestwards by May 11, following which it will gradually recurve itself, and move north-northeastwards towards the coasts of Bangladesh and Myanmar.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) announced in a statement dated May 9, 2023, that a "well-marked" low-pressure area lying over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a depression by this evening. After this, the depression is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining areas of east central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea on May 10, the IMD said in the statement.
The potential cyclonic storm has been named "Cyclone Mocha".
The cyclonic storm is likely to move north-northwestwards by May 11, following which it will gradually recurve itself, and move north-northeastwards towards the coasts of Bangladesh and Myanmar.
A trough is associated with this well-marked low-pressure area that has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea. This trough runs from the west central Bay of Bengal.

In the lower tropospheric levels, a trough or wind discontinuity runs from Telangana to south Tamil Nadu, the statement said.
The IMD has also issued a forecast and warnings associated with the well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining south Andaman Sea.
"Heavy to very heavy rainfall" is likely over isolated regions in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from May 9 to 11, and "heavy rainfall" is likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 12.
Winds travelling over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands at speeds of 45 to 55 kilometres per hour will reach speeds of up to 65 kilometres per hour on May 9.
They may also increase to speeds of 75 kilometres per hour on May 10 and 11.
The sea condition will be very rough over the north Andaman Sea on May 12 and 13.
The IMD has issued a warning asking fishermen, small ships, boats and trawlers not to venture into the southeast and central Bay of Bengal, and the Andaman Sea from May 9. They must not venture in regions in and around the northern Bay of Bengal from May 12 to 14.
Also, the fishermen, small ships, boats and trawlers which are already there over the southeast and central Bay of Bengal, and the north Andaman Sea have been advised to return immediately.
Those in deep sea have been advised to return to the coast by May 11.
