Amritpal Singh's Aide Lovepreet Toofan Released From Jail Day After 'Waris Punjab De' Supporters Went On Rampage

The Punjab Police had recently registered an FIR against the Khalistan activist Amritpal Singh as well as his associates on charges of abduction and rioting.

New Delhi: Lovepreet Toofan, a close aide of 'Waris Punjab De' chief Amritpal Singh, was released from Amritsar Jail on Friday, news agency ANI reported.

The development comes a day after Amritpal Singh’s supporters went on a rampage in Amritsar. Armed with swords, lathis and guns they attacked police, broke barricades and gathered outside Ajnala police station.

The Punjab Police had recently registered an FIR against the Khalistan activist Amritpal Singh as well as his associates on charges of abduction and rioting.

The FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by one Barinder Singh, a resident of Salempur village in Chamkaur Sahib, who said that he was beaten up by Amritpal and his men.

Speaking on the incident, Punjab minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal said that the people should have faith on Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to maintain law and order in the state.

“I salute Punjab police personnel who didn't allow disrespect of Guru Granth Sahib and controlled the situation without use of force yesterday. Government is with its employees who were injured in the crowd. In time, people will understand reason behind what happened in Ajnala,” ANI quoted Dhaliwal as saying.

Notably, a Punjab police DSP had moved an application before the court for releasing Lovepreet Toofan from custody and from discharging him on grounds that he was not involved in the said case. He was taken into custody in his alleged connection with a kidnapping case.

“Since the accused is no more required by the investigating officer for judicial custody, Lovepreet Singh is discharged from custody only and be released,” Manpreet Kaur, Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Ajnala, said in her order.

"It is made clear that the accused Lovepreet Singh...is discharged from custody. A direction is issued to the SHO concerned to conduct investigation in the case and submit its report. Necessary intimation be sent to the Superintendent of Jail, Amritsar, in this regard," she added.
