'Let There Be Elections Every Month': NCP’s Supriya Sule Taunts Govt Over Fuel Price Hike
The NCP leader said the elections must be held every month so that the petrol, diesel and LPG prices don’t get hiked.
New Delhi: Poking fun at Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government over the hike in fuel prices, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Supriya Sule on Wednesday said only elections keep prices under control.
The NCP leader said the elections must be held every month so that the petrol, diesel and LPG prices don’t get hiked.
“Only elections are stopping the fuel price hike. Let there be elections every month so that the petrol, diesel and LPG prices don't get hiked,” she said in the Lok Sabha.
Earlier in the day, both the Houses of Parliament witnessed adjournments following protests by the Opposition members over the rise in prices of petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders.
Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, raised the issue of price rise as soon as the Lower House met for the day.
Demanding rollback of price rise of petroleum products, the members of the Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Left trooped into the well of the House.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla tried to run the House amid continuous sloganeering against the ruling dispensation by the Opposition members.
As the sloganeering continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till 12 noon.
Similar scenes were witnessed in the Rajya Sabha where several Opposition members had given notices for discussion on the price issue.
Rajya Sabha chairman and Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, however, disallowed the notices stating this is not an issue to discuss.
The Opposition members, however, appeared adamant on their demand for a discussion on the matter and displayed posters in the Rajya Sabha in protest.
Vice President Naidu later adjourned the Rajya Sabha till 12 noon as the noisy scene continued.
The proceedings of both Houses of Parliament have since resumed.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Opposition members had staged a walkout from the Lok Sabha in protest against the hike in prices while demanding a rollback.
This development came as the Centre earlier on Tuesday hiked the prices of petrol and diesel by 80 paise a litre while domestic cooking gas prices were increased by Rs 50 per cylinder.
