‘Kisan Sabak Sikhana Bhi Jaanta Hai...’: Rakesh Tikait Warns Centre As Farmers Protest At Jantar Mantar

New Delhi: Escalating his attack on the Centre while reiterating the demand for a complete withdrawal of the three farm laws, Bharatiya Kisan Union spokesperson Rakesh Tikait on Saturday issued a stern warning to the ruling dispensation and said the farmers know how to teach a lesson to the people who ignore them.

“Through the Kisan Sansad, the farmers have done the work of awakening the deaf and dumb government. The farmer who knows how to run the Parliament also knows how to teach a lesson to those who ignore them. Let no one forget that,” he tweeted.

Tikait had earlier this month given a two-month ultimatum to the Central government and warned that “there will be war” if the farmers’ demands are not met.

Accusing the government of not paying heed to the farmers’ demands, the Bharatiya Kisan Union spokesperson had earlier this month said the “farmers have been demanding that the laws be repealed and will not return till the laws are rolled back”.

“The government should discuss. We give the government two months... In a democratic country, the government is not agreeing with the farmers, but the movement will continue until the government fulfils their demands,” he said.

Around 200 farmers have been holding the ‘Kisan Sansad’ at the Jantar Mantar in the national capital for the past three days to press for their demand for complete withdrawal of the three new farm laws which were brought out late last year.

Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar earlier on Thursday reiterated the Central government's stand on the farmers’ issue and said the ruling dispensation is ready to discuss all issues with the protesting farmers with an open mind.

‘The country has witnessed that these farm laws are beneficial and are in favour of farmers. We have had discussions about these laws. If they express their issues with the laws point-wise, we can discuss it,’ he told reporters outside the Parliament.

The farmers mostly from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have been camping at Delhi borders since November last year, demanding that the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, Farmers' (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020, be rolled back and a new law made to guarantee minimum support price for crops.

Several rounds of talks between the farmers and the government have failed to break the deadlock.
