Kalka-Shimla Railway Section Is Covered In Snow, Railway Ministry Shares Photos

Tourists are flocking to snow-bound Himachal Pradesh in large numbers as the hill state is giving them a white-carpet welcome.

New Delhi: The hill capital town of Shimla witnessed the season's heaviest snowfall on Sunday, giving tourists the perfect Himachal Pradesh experience.

The heavy snowfall in the state led to road links getting snapped at many places but that didn’t stop tourists from flocking to Himachal’s picturesque locales that are giving them a white-carpet welcome.

The Kalka-Shimla railway section looked magical in the images shared by the Ministry of Railways.

“Catch glimpses of the  Kalka-Shimla railway section of the #IndianRailways, after the recent spell of fresh snowfall,” it posted on January 24, calling it a “sight to behold!”.

This railway section is a 2 feet and 6 inches narrow-gauge route that traverses a mostly mountainous route from Kalka to Shimla. Built in 1898, the route has 107 tunnels and 864 bridges. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 2008.

The section is known for panoramic views of the hills and local villages, which look more dramatic during winters when it snows.

Shimla recorded more than 20 cm of snowfall on Sunday, with the temperature dipping to minus 0.3 degrees Celsius. It snowed in nearby Kufri and Narkanda also.

Meanwhile, minimum temperatures have dipped in the state with cold wave conditions continuing.

According to reports, intermittent snow hampered road clearing work at some places even as tourists continue to make a beeline for the state to enjoy snow.

Nearly 500 roads are blocked in Lahaul-Spiti, Shimla, Chamba, Kullu, Mandi, Kinnaur, Solan, Sirmaur and Hamirpur districts, The Tribune reported.

Also, a total of 626 transformers have suffered damages and over 200 water supply schemes stand disrupted, the report said.

Quoting the local weather office, the report said rain and snow are likely at isolated places on Wednesday and moderate to dense fog could occur in some pockets in Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Kangra and Mandi districts on Thursday.
