J&K: Police Arrest Wanted Hizb-Ul-Mujahideen Militant From Anantnag
According to a top police official, on a specific input a cordon and search operation, was launched in Sagam Kokernag by police and the army’s 19RR.
New Delhi: The Jammu and Kashmir police arrested an active Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant in the Kokernag area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Friday. As per the information provided by the police, he was active since September 2017.
The militant has been identified as Mohammad Ishaq Shergujri who is a resident of Nogam Verinag.
According to a top police official, on a specific input a cordon and search operation, was launched in Sagam Kokernag by police and the army’s 19RR. During the CASO, one militant was arrested with arms and ammunition.
The officer further added that Shergujri was active since September 15, 2017, in the Anantnag district. He was a C-category Hizb militant and was wanted in many militance-related incidents.
Meanwhile, another incident of encounter in Anantnag resulted in the death of two Hizb militants. The encounter started on Friday morning at Srichand Top, East of Batkoot, Pahalgam area of Anantnag, the Kashmir police said.
As the operation still continues, two militants have been killed so far. As per the police input, further details are awaited on the operation.
In March 2022, the police arrested Hizb-ul-Mujahideen-affiliated militants for the murder of Shabir Ahmed Mir, a Sarpanch in Kulgam. Mir was shot dead at his home in Kulgam, 70 kilometers away from Srinagar.
“Three terrorists have been arrested. A terror module of the proscribed terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen involved in the recent killing of sarpanch Shabir Ahmed Mir has been busted and incriminating material including two pistols have been recovered from them,” Vijay Kumar, IGP Kashmir had told news agency ANI.
