ISRO Says Moon Lander Vikram Located By Orbiter of Chandrayaan 2, But No Communication Yet

The ISRO did not, however, say in what condition the lander is on the lunar surface.

New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Tuesday reiterated that its moon lander Vikram has been located by the Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter. "#VikramLander has been located by the orbiter of #Chandrayaan2, but no communication with it yet," the Indian space agency wrote on twitter. "All possible efforts are being made to establish communication with lander," ISRO said. The ISRO did not, however, say in what condition the lander is on the lunar surface. The space agency continues to remain silent as to proximate cause for the moon lander tumbling and deviating from its original flight path on September 7 early morning. India's mission to soft-land on the moon suffered a setback during the wee hours on Saturday, with 'Vikram' module losing communication with ground stations, just 2.1 km from the lunar surface during its final descent. The Vikram module, which was supposed to carry out various tests on the lunar soil, had completed the rough braking phase as planned and entered the phase of fine braking at an altitude of 2.1 km, when it lost communication. 'Vikram', named after Dr Vikram A Sarabhai, the father of the Indian Space Programme, was designed to execute a soft-landing on the lunar surface, and to function for one lunar day, which is equivalent to about 14 earth days.
