Indian Coast Guard Rescues 6 Crew Members From Sunken Cargo Ship In Arabian Sea

Indian Coast Guard rescued six crew members of MSV Salamat, which sank 60-70 nautical miles off Mangalore. The crew was safely brought to New Mangalore Port.

In the early hours of May 14, 2025, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully rescued six crew members from the cargo vessel MSV Salamat, which sank approximately 60-70 nautical miles southwest of Mangalore.

At 12:15 PM on May 14, the ICG received an emergency alert from the transit vessel MT Epic Susui. The ship reported spotting a small boat floating about 52 nautical miles off the coast of Suratkal, Karnataka, carrying six individuals.

Acting swiftly, the Coast Guard deployed the patrol vessel ICGS Vikram, already on routine surveillance nearby, to the location. The rescue team promptly evacuated all six men safely from the dinghy.

Initial reports indicate that MSV Salamat had departed from Mangalore port on May 12, heading towards Kadmat Island in Lakshadweep. The vessel, carrying a mixed cargo of cement and construction materials, began taking on water around 5:30 AM on May 14, ultimately sinking. The exact cause of the sinking remains unclear.

The rescued crew members have been identified as:

  • Ismail Sharif
  • Alemun Ahmed Bhai Ghavda
  • Kakal Suleman Ismail
  • Akbar Abdul Surani
  • Kasam Ismail Mepani
  • Ajmal

They escaped the sinking ship by boarding a small dinghy, which was later spotted by MT Epic Susui.

Following the successful rescue, all crew members received first aid and were safely transported to New Mangalore Port on May 15, 2025. Local authorities will conduct further questioning to investigate the circumstances leading to the ship's sinking.

According to the Indian Coast Guard, at 1215 hours on 14 May, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) received a distress alert from MT Epic Susui, a transiting vessel, reporting a small boat adrift with six survivors onboard, approximately 52 nautical miles off the coast of Surathkal, Karnataka.

ICG Ship Vikram, which was on routine patrol in the area, was immediately diverted to the location. The Coast Guard team promptly located and safely rescued all six survivors from the dinghy.

Preliminary reports suggest that MSV SALAMATH, which departed Mangalore Port on 12 May for Kadmat Island in Lakshadweep, began taking on water at 0530 hours on 14 May, leading to its eventual sinking. The vessel was transporting a mixed cargo of cement and construction materials. The exact cause of the flooding remains unknown.
