Navy Gets Shot In The Arm As India Successfully Test-Fires Vertically Launched Short Range Surface to Air Missile

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said this system would further enhance defence capability of Indian Naval Ships against aerial threats.

New Delhi: India successfully test-fired the Vertically Launched Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur off the coast of Odisha, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said on Tuesday.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said this system would further enhance the defence capability of Indian Naval Ships against aerial threats. The air defence system, which can engage targets at around 15 km, is being developed by DRDO for naval warships.

"This has paved the way for the integration of weapon system onboard Indian naval ships," a press release said. The first trial was conducted on February 22 this year. The missile system will replace the older Barak-1 surface to air missile system.

Anti-Drone Technology

Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Sunday that India was developing indigenous anti-drone technology to combat the rising threat posed by UAVs on the country's borders and it would be made available to security personnel shortly.

A number of drones and UAVs have recently been spotted near India's border with Pakistan.

"It is the commitment of the government. There was a mention of a growing threat from drones. BSF, DRDO and NSG are trying to develop an anti-drone technology. I have complete faith in our scientists that we will be able to develop an indigenous anti-drone technology soon," the Union Home Minister said.

On the occasion of the 57th Raising Day of the Border Security Force (BSF), Amit Shah said border security was national security for the Modi administration and the government was committed to providing the best border guarding technologies in the world to the force.
