India’s Defence Budget Grows Over Two Times In 12 Years, Reaches Rs. 6.81 Lakh Crore

In a post on X, the Defence ministry said that it reflects the steadfast commitment of India to enhance national security.

The Defence Ministry said on Sunday that the budget increased from Rs 2.53 lakh crore in 2013-14 to Rs 6.81 lakh crore in 2025-26. In a post on X, the ministry said that it reflects the steadfast commitment of India to enhance national security, modernising its armed forces and also bolstering the military infrastructure.

The ministry said that the budget was 2.53 lakh in FY 2013, and it saw a growth of 2.6x in FY 2025-2026, leading to the total budget of Rs. 6.81 lakh crore.

“The defence budget increased from Rs 2.53 lakh crore in 2013-14 to Rs 6.81 lakh crore in 2025-26. Strategic reforms, private sector participation, and innovation have boosted indigenous manufacturing, making India a self-reliant, globally trusted defence exporter while strengthening national security and economic growth,” the ministry posted on X.

On Sunday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility in Lucknow. According to newsonair.gov.in, he said, the inauguration of Brahmos integration and testing facility will help in further strengthening India’s defence prowess. He said, the inauguration of this facility is also important because today is National Technology Day.

He also said, on this day in 1998, under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the scientists showed India’s strength to the world by conducting nuclear tests in Pokhran.

Speaking about about BrahMos as quoted by newsonair.gov, the defence minister said that BrahMos is a confluence of the highest defence technology of India and Russia. Just as our Uttar Pradesh is known worldwide for the ‘Sangam’ in Prayagraj, in the same way, in the coming times, Lucknow will also be known for the confluence of this technology, Singh said. In the coming times, it will create direct or indirect employment opportunities, and this region will emerge as a growth centre, he further added.
