Bound In Handcuffs, Opposition Leaders Protest 'Inhuman Treatment' Of Indian Deportees From US — WATCH

Opposition MPs protested outside Parliament over the alleged ill-treatment of illegal Indian immigrants from the US.

Opposition MPs on Thursday staged a protest outside Parliament over the alleged ill-treatment of illegal Indian immigrants from the US. The opposition MPs staged the protest bound in handcuffs as a symbolic demonstration.

Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, SP MP Dharmendra Yadav, Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, and a few other leaders can be seen being handcuffed to mark their protest alleging that Indian citizens were subjected to inhuman treatment while being deported from the US.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Congress party president Mallikarjun Kharge asked Modi government to give a detailed statement on the deportation. He further asked the BJP-led central government about why Indian planes were not sent to bring back the deported immigrants.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav questioned the goverment over the deportation of Indian citizens allegedly being handcuffed. He said, as quoted by news agency ANI, "Those who were showing the dream of making India Vishwaguru, why are they silent now? Indian citizens are deported to India by being handcuffed like slaves and in inhumane conditions. What the external affairs ministry is doing? What did the govt do to protect children and women from this disrespect? We want the govt to reply to this and allow the opposition to discuss the issue in parliament..."

Commenting on the issue, AAP MP Malvinder Singh Kang said, "It was very unfortunate that the immigrants were handcuffed and deported, as if they were hardcore criminals". He added that this will affect the image of the country.

What Is The US Deportation Controversy About?

A US military aircraft carrying 104 illegal immigrants landed in Punjab on Wednesday. Jaspal Singh, who was one of the deportees, claimed that they were handcuffed and that their legs were chained throughout the journey. He further said that they were set free only after landing at the Amritsar airport, news agency PTI reported.

However, the fact-check department of the government on Wednesday said that the image showing illegal immigrants in chains, which is being circulated does not show Indians, but instead shows those deported to Guatemala.

The US military plane carrying the first such batch of Indians was deported by the Donald Trump government as part of a crackdown against illegal immigrants.
