Huge relief for Priya Prakash as SC rejects FIR over allegedly hurting religious sentiments
Complaints had been lodged in Maharashtra and Telangana against Varrier and film director Omar Lulu for allegedly hurting sentiments of the Muslim community through a song in their movie "Oru Adaar Love".
New Delhi: Supreme Court's decision on Friday comes as a huge relief for Malayalam film actress Priya Praksh Varrier, as the apex court quashed the FIR against her for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
News agency ANI tweeted to inform that the FIR in connection to the viral wink song has been rejected by the Supreme Court.
Earlier this year, Varrier shot to nation-wide popularity overnight by her viral ‘wink,’ in the song Manikya Malaria Puvi. Rejecting the FIR against the actress, the apex court said that the intent of the actress and the director was not to hurt any sentiment nor insult any religion and therefore a case cannot be framed under section 295 of the Indian Penal Code. Complaints had been lodged in Maharashtra and Telangana against Varrier and film director Omar Lulu for allegedly hurting sentiments of the Muslim community through a song in their movie "Oru Adaar Love". The first song of Malayalam movie 'Oru Adaar Love' became viral on the social media within few hours of its release because of Varrier's expressions and wink. Since then, the 18-year-old has become the talk of the town. However, Hyderabad Police had registered a case against Omar Lulu on February 14 under section 295A of the IPC (hurting religious sentiments). Varrier had then filed a petition in the apex court, seeking to quash the cases filed against the song. The petition said the controversy on the song 'Manikya Malaria Puvi' in the Malayalam film 'Oru Adar Love' is irrelevant and it's a folk song of the Muslims of the Malabar region.Supreme Court today quashed an FIR registered in Telangana against actress Priya Prakash Varrier, in connection with the 'wink song'.
