Background

Himanta Biswa Swearing-In: Himanta Biswa Sarma to take place as the chief minister of Assam, he will be replacing incumbent Sarbananda Sonowal who himself has proposed Sarma as the next CM along with state president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, and supported by newly elected MLA from Halflong, Nandita Gorlosa.

Sarma was unanimously elected the next Chief Minister of Assam in a key meeting where Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar and party General Secretary Arun Singh were present as central observers.

Himanta Biswa Sarma crossed over from Congress before the 2014 Lok Sabha election and has risen to gain prominence over Sarbananda Sonowal. He is considered a big factor in the party's victory in the 2016 election, the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, and the recently held assembly elections 2021 where the saffron party BJP managed to retain power easily.

The BJP won a second straight term in the recently concluded assembly polls in the state. The party won 60 seats in the 126-member Assam assembly while its alliance partners AGP got nine seats and UPPL six seats.

The North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) leader is expected to take the oath of office around noon today. BJP National President JP Nadda along with the top party leader and half a dozen chief ministers are expected to attend the event.
