Himachal To Implement Uniform Civil Code Soon, CM Jairam Thakur Claims It Won't 'Harm Muslims'

New Delhi: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur announced on Monday that the state will soon implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), news agency ANI reported.

Thakur arrived in Kangra on a two-day visit. At the airport, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists greeted him warmly.

“We will do it (UCC) soon. The situation in Himachal is different from other states and it will not harm Muslim society. I think everyone especially Muslim women will welcome this step. They will have a healthy family life to live and it will be beneficial for them,” Thakur informed ANI.

Thakur stated last month that the introduction of UCC is not ruled out and that "a decision would be made after evaluating it." He stated that officials were looking into it and that no decision would be made quickly.

A dispute about a uniform civil code has erupted in numerous jurisdictions across the country.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that UCC should be implemented in the best interests of Muslim women, or else polygamy will persist.

Earlier, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh stated that a "high-powered" expert committee will be constituted to develop the state's uniform civil code.

Meanwhile, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has called the uniform civil code "an unconstitutional and anti-minorities move," and has accused the Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Central governments of using the law to divert attention away from inflation, the economy, and rising unemployment.
