New Delhi: Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, was martyred on November 24, 1675, while some historians believe he was slain on November 11, 1675. He fought for people's rights to practice and preach their religion without any hindrance.

The Sikh Guru was born in Amritsar, Punjab as the youngest son of Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh Guru. He was a spiritual scholar and poet whose 115 songs are included in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. He was a brave and principled warrior. Guru Hargobind bestowed the name Tegh Bahadur on him when he had shown his bravery in a battle against the Mughals.

PM Narendra Modi on Monday paid homage to Sri Guru Teg Bahadur on the day of his martyrdom. He tweeted, "I pay homage to Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji on the day of his martyrdom. Your life, dedicated to the protection of religion, culture, and humanity, is a great inspiration for society," Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath said.

He also paid a visit to Gurdwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha Jatashankar in Gorakhpur and offered prayers to Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji on the day of his martyrdom.

Guru Tegh Bahadur ji sacrificed his life for the sake of Dharma. It is rightly said about him that ‘Sir Diya Par Saar Na Diya’. His sacrifice will be remembered for all times to come. He is called ‘Hind ki Chadar’ as his martyrdom is seen as a sacrifice for Humanity. Let us all take a pledge to adopt Guru Tegh Bahadur ji’s teachings of unity and brotherhood in our lives."
