‘They Will Welcome Me Very Soon,’ Says MP Ranjan Gogoi After Opposition Protests In RS During Oath

President Ram Nath Kovind had nominated the former CJI to the Rajya Sabha on March 16. Gogoi is credited for delivering the landmark verdict in the decade-long Ayodhya dispute case.

New Delhi: Former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi took oath as Rajya Sabha MP on Thursday, as Congress MPs staged a walkout, raising slogans against him. Gogoi's wife Rupanjali Gogoi, daughter, and son in law were also present in Parliament. Congress staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha over Gogoi's membership to the House, raising slogans of “shame on Ranjan Gogoi”. Meanwhile, Union Minister Ravishankar Prasad welcomed Gogoi in the Rajya Sabha. "They will welcome me very soon. There are no critics," Gogoi told reporters as he left the Parliament premises after taking oath. Gogoi served as the 46th Chief Justice of India from October 3, 2018, to November 17, 2019. President Ram Nath Kovind had nominated the former CJI to the Rajya Sabha on March 16. Gogoi is credited for delivering the landmark verdict in the decade-long Ayodhya dispute case on  November 9, 2019. Watch here: The apex court had ordered the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site by setting up a trust, while ordering five acres be given to Muslims in Ayodhya to construct a mosque. The bench held that the "possessory claim of the Hindus to the composite whole of the disputed property stands on a better footing than the evidence from the Muslims," while emphasising on tolerance and mutual co-existence, which played a crucial role to nourish the secular commitment of the country and its people.
