Farmers Call Off Year-Long Protest As Impasse With Centre Resolved, To Vacate Delhi Borders Soon | 5 Points

According to reports, the farmers protesting at Delhi borders will vacate the spots on Saturday and will meet on January 15.

New Delhi: After standing tall against the three contentious agri laws passed by the Central government last year, farmers' organisations on Thursday announced to end their year-long protest after the Modi government handed over a revised proposal as demanded by the agitators.

The decision to call off the protest was announced by Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) - an umbrella body of the farmers protesting along various borders of Delhi over agricultural issues.

The protesting farmers will now start heading back to their homes.

"The Samyukta Kisan Morcha-led farmers’ agitation is being suspended because the Centre has agreed to our demands," farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chadhuni said.

According to reports, the farmers protesting at Delhi borders will vacate the spots on Saturday and will meet on January 15.

Meanwhile, the farmer leaders have also warned that the agitation could be resumed if Centre "backtracks from its promises."

Farmers' Protest Called Off | Key Updates

1. The announcement by SKM - which is spearheading the movement - came after it received a central government signed letter where it agreed to consider their pending demands, including withdrawal of cases against farmers and form a committee on minimum support price (MSP).

2. However, SKM core committee member Balbir Singh Rajewal told reporters that it is not the end as the movement is just suspended. We have decided to meet again on January 15. Reportedly, a review meeting will be convened by farmers' leaders on January 15 to see if the government met all the demands. If they do not, we can take a call on resuming the protest.

3. December 10 will be marked as a day of mourning of those who lost their lives during the year-long farmers' protest. On December 11, farmers will begin leaving from Singhu border and go back home. Farmer leaders have also said that if all goes as assured, all farmers' protest across the country will be concluded on December 15.

4. Farmer leaders said that farmers will take out victory marches on December 11 to their respective places. "Farmers will start vacating Delhi border points from December 11, and this may take some time," farmer leader Rakesh Tikait said.

5. Meanwhile, farmers protesting at the Singhu border have started removing their tents. They were also seen exchanging sweets.
