Background

New Delhi: The ongoing farmers' protest against the three contentious farm laws passed by the Centre has now entered its sixteenth straight day and Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Thursday said that the government wanted to liberate the farmers from the shackles of the mandi system which will help them to sell their produce to anyone, anywhere, and at any price. Farmers staged a nationwide Bharat Bandh on December 8.  However, the farmers' unions rejected the proposal and said they would intensify their agitation until the government accepts their demand for a complete repeal of the three laws.

After the fifth round of talks with the Centre failed, farmers had called a Bharat Bandh on December 8, 2020.

After the Bandh was successful in most part of the countries with opposition trying to hold some ground on the pretext of the protests, the scheduled talks for sixth round were called off. Government sent a proposal with certain amendments which was rejected by the farmers' unions who were however adamant on the repeal of the laws and rejected the proposal.
