Durga Puja Violence In Bangladesh 'Disturbing', High Commission In Close Contact With Authorities: MEA

“We have seen some disturbing reports of untoward incidents involving attacks on religious gatherings in Bangladesh,” MEA official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday dubbed reports of attack on the Hindu temples and Durga puja venues in Bangladesh “disturbing” and said the Indian High Commission in Dhaka as well as consulates in the neighbouring nation are in close contact with the authorities there and at local levels over the matter.

“We have seen some disturbing reports of untoward incidents involving attacks on religious gatherings in Bangladesh,” MEA official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

Bagchi said “the government of Bangladesh has reacted promptly to ensure control of the situation, including the deployment of law enforcement machinery”.

“We also understand that the ongoing festive celebrations of Durga puja continue in Bangladesh with the support of government agencies and of course, a large majority of the public,” he added when asked about the reported attacks on Durga puja pandals and temples in Bangladesh, PTI reported.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has issued a tough warning and said those involved in the attacks on Hindu temples and Durga Puja venues in Comilla will not be spared.

“The incidents in Comilla are being thoroughly investigated. Nobody will be spared. It doesn't matter which religion they belong to. They will be hunted down and punished,” she said, Dhaka Tribune reported.

According to reports, the Bangladesh Police have arrested 43 people involved in the attack on Hindu houses and for vandalising temples in Comilla town on Wednesday.
