Durai Vaiko Resigns As MDMK Principal Secretary Amid Party Tensions

Durai Vaiko, who is the son of MDMK founder and veteran leader Vaiko, shared the news via a post on social media platform 'X'.

In a significant development within Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), party leader and Lok Sabha MP Durai Vaiko announced his resignation as the party’s principal secretary on Saturday, citing internal friction as the reason for his decision.

Durai, who is the son of MDMK founder and veteran leader Vaiko, shared the news via a post on social media platform 'X'. In his statement, he pointed to ongoing tensions with a particular individual within the party, who he claimed had been targeting the leadership and making unfounded allegations for the past four years.

"I don't want to continue working as the principal secretary amid such a person. Therefore, I am relieving myself from the post of principal secretary," he added, as per PTI.

Durai Vaiko To Continue In MDMK

While stepping down from the principal secretary post, Durai clarified that he would remain a committed member of MDMK and continue to serve as its primary worker. He also reaffirmed his dedication to the people of Tiruchirappalli, whom he represents in the Lok Sabha.

Durai added that he would attend the upcoming Administrative Council meeting at the party’s headquarters, ‘Thayagam,’ but would refrain from participating in future sessions involving major decisions.

Importantly, Durai emphasised that his move was intended to avoid causing any harm to the party or to his father, Vaiko. “Please ensure that our leader Vaiko doesn’t face any hardship because of me,” he urged fellow party functionaries.

The resignation comes at a crucial time for the MDMK, which is part of the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu, just a year ahead of Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026.
