Delhi Acid Attack: DCW Writes To Amazon, Flipkart Seeking Explanation On Acid Sale

In a letter written to Amazon and Flipkart CEOs, the women panel sought information on availability of acid online, details of sellers who have placed 'acid' as a product and their licenses. 

New Delhi: The Delhi Commission for Women has written to CEOs of online marketplaces, Flipkart and Amazon in connection with the acid attack case on 17-year-old girl in the national capital after "the commission learnt that the accsued person had bought acid through the online shopping portal 'Flipkart', reported news agency ANI. 

"The Commission has learnt that the accused person had bought acid through the online shopping portal 'Flipkart'. The Commission has also learnt that acid is easily available on leading online shopping platforms such as 'Amazon' and 'Flipkart' which is illegal. The ease of availability of acid on online platforms is a matter of grave concern and needs to be checked urgently," the letter stated.    

In a letter written to Amazon and Flipkart CEOs, the women panel sought information on availability of acid online, details of sellers who have placed 'acid' as a product and their licenses. 

The panel also asked if photo IDs were asked by people purchasing the acid and reason if not.

In its letter, the DCW also sought information on policy adopted by these companies on sale of government regulated products online and steps taken to remove restricted items including acid from the online portal. 

The womens' panel also asked for details of persons responsible for allowing sale of acid on their platform and report of detailed action taken in the matter. 

In light of the acid attack in Delhi, acid attack survivor Laxmi has asked for a stringent ban on the sale of acid: both over the counter and online.

A schoolgirl was attacked with acid in the broad daylight in the national capital on Wednesday. Two bike-borne men threw acid on a schoolgirl in Delhi's Dwarka area, the Delhi Police reported. 

According to police, the matter was reported to them around 9 am and the victim was attacked in Mohan Garden area.

The incident was reported at around 9 am. The victim has been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital where she is currently undergoing treatment, ANI reported citing Delhi Police.
