Decisions In Democracy Should Be On Broad Consensus, Not Majority: Om Birla On 2 Years In Office

New Delhi: Asserting decisions in a democracy should be taken based on a broad consensus and not just majority, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday said his attempt has been to give sufficient time to the party which has even a single member in the House.
The Lok Sabha Speaker, who made this remark on completion of two years in office, said “our effort in democracy should be to respect views of the Opposition members”.
“My attempt has been to give sufficient time to party which has even a single member in the House. In democracy, decisions should be taken based on a broad consensus and not just majority,” ANI quoted Birla as saying.

The Lok Sabha Speaker further said his attempt has been to ensure that no one needs to come in the well of the House.
“The Parliament members argue it is the tradition to show placards and raise slogans in well of the House in case of differences. I politely told them that such traditions aren't good,” he added.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Lok Sabha Speaker for completing two years in office and said he “has ushered in a series of steps that have enriched our Parliamentary democracy and enhanced productivity”.

“It is worth noting that Shri @ombirlakota Ji has placed special emphasis on giving first time MPs, young MPs and women MPs the opportunity to speak on the floor of the House. He has also strengthened the various Committees, whose role in our democracy is vital,” he said in a series of tweets.
