DDC Election Results, J&K: BJP Emerges As Single Largest Party, Wins In Kashmir For First Time, Gupkar Alliance Crosses 100

The BJP on Tuesday won an election for the first time from any seat in Kashmir while facing regional heavyweights like the National Conference and the PDP.

Jammu-Kashmir: The counting for the DDC Elections result continues on Wednesday and out of 280 seats, the results for 273 seats have been declared. The Farooq Abdullah lead Gupkar Alliance has declared victory on 110 seats while BJP has emerged as the single largest party by winning 74 seats. Also Read|More Trouble For TMC? The independent parties have also performed well and have attained 49 seats. BJPhas kept an upper hand in the Jammu region while the Gupkar alliance leads in the Kashmir valley.

BJP wins seats in Kashmir valley for the first time

The BJP on Tuesday won an election for the first time from any seat in Kashmir while facing regional heavyweights like the National Conference and the PDP. Aijaz Hussain won the Khonmoh-II District Development Council seat in Srinagar, while Aijaz Ahmad Khan gave the party more reason to cheer by winning the Tulail seat in Bandipora district.

Results prove abrogation of Article 370 was unconstitutional: Gupkar Alliance

The members of the Gupkar alliance on Tuesday welcomed the results of the DDC elections, stating that it's a verdict on the Centre's unconstitutional decision to abrogate Article 370. The Congress complimented the voters for their courage and resolve to "firmly reject the BJP and its misguided Kashmir policy".

"Today's DDC results have made it clear that people of J&K voted en masse for@JKPAGD thus rejecting the unconstitutional decision to abrogate Article 370. They have overwhelmingly supported @JKPAGD which stands for the restoration of J&Ks special status," the PDP president tweeted. She said the PAGD emerged as a winner despite all the obstacles.

'Victory of democracy': Union Minister Anurag Thakur

Union Minister Anurag Thakur, the BJP's in-charge of these polls, called the results a victory of democracy. "Even though people were threatened, they came out in huge numbers to cast their vote. This is the victory of democracy. PM Modi's dream that at grassroots level polls should be held in J&K has been fulfilled," Thakur told news agency ANI.

The district councils are meant to drive development through direct funding from the Centre. The DDCs, in the absence of an assembly, will be the link between the people and the government in Jammu and Kashmir and each council chairperson will enjoy the status of a junior minister.
