Severe cyclonic storm 'Remal' weakened into a cyclonic storm on Monday morning, with wind speeds dropping to 80-90 kilometres per hour after making landfall around midnight on Sunday, according to the Meteorological Department.
The storm, which was positioned 150 km northeast of Sagar Island at 5.30 am, brought torrential rains to Kolkata and the coastal districts of West Bengal overnight. The weather system is expected to move northeastwards and weaken further, the department stated in a bulletin.
Kolkata recorded 146 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am on Sunday and 5.30 am on Monday. The city experienced a maximum wind speed of 74 kmph, while Dum Dum in the northern outskirts recorded gusts up to 91 kmph. Other areas in south Bengal also received significant rainfall, including Haldia (110 mm), Tamluk (70 mm), and Nimpith (70 mm).
The weather office has forecast more rain for Kolkata and the southern districts, including Nadia and Murshidabad, with the possibility of intense downpours and gusty winds until Tuesday morning.
Scenes of widespread devastation were evident across West Bengal's coastal areas, with extensive damage to infrastructure and property. Cyclone Remal wreaked havoc after tearing through the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal, with winds reaching speeds of 135 km per hour during landfall between Sagar Island and Khepupara, near southwest Mongla in Bangladesh, beginning at 8.30 pm on Sunday.
Efforts to restore normalcy are underway, with emergency services working tirelessly to clear debris and restore power in the affected areas. The cyclone has caused significant disruptions in air, rail, and road transportation in Kolkata and other parts of southern Bengal.
Several suburban trains were cancelled in the Sealdah South section of Eastern Railway (ER) due to the cyclone, though services resumed at 9 am on Monday, an ER official said. Additionally, Kolkata airport suspended flight operations for 21 hours from Sunday noon, affecting 394 flights in both international and domestic sectors.
