Cyclone Mocha To Intensify Into Severe Storm By May 12, Sea Conditions Likely To Be Very Rough — Top Points
Cyclone Mocha is to be active in the country from May 9 and the storm is likely to intensify over the Bay of Bengal by May 12 with wind expected to blow at a speed of over 80 kmph.
Cyclone Mocha will be active in the country from Tuesday, May 9 with wind estimated to blow at a speed of 80 kmph. Cyclonic winds have formed over the Bay of Bengal and surrounding areas where deep low pressure will form on Tuesday and later may intensify in a cyclonic storm. Another cyclonic circulation is forming over the northwest Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu coast. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for rain in many states and snowfall in the Himalayan region. Cyclone Mocha will be the first cyclonic storm of the year.
According to HT, IMD warned that the wind speed may reach 130 kmph speed when it intensifies into a severe storm.

- The low-pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea has become Well Marked Low-Pressure Area over the same region at 0530 IST on Tuesday, May 9.
- It is very likely to intensify into a depression by today evening over the same region. IMD DG Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that it will continue to move and intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm by 10th May.
- It is likely to move initially north-northwestwards towards east central Bay of Bengal till 11th May. and then will move towards the central part of the Bay of Bengal. By the 12th morning, it will be over the central part of East Central Bay of Bengal.
- Mohapatra said that it will become a very severe cyclonic storm over central Bay of Bengal and it will change its path from the 12th onwards. It is expected to move towards Bangladesh and Myanmar coast.
- The time of landfall (and) expected intensity as it moves towards the coast will be available when the low pressure area intensifies into a depression, Mohapatra was quoted as saying by HT.
- A Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation lies over north Pakistan & adjoining Jammu & Kashmir in middle tropospheric levels.

- According to Skymet Weather, during the next 24 hours, light to moderate rain and snowfall may occur over Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh.
- Light to moderate rain with one or two heavy spells is possible over parts of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
- Light rain with dust storms may occur in parts of Punjab and Haryana. Light rain is possible over Meghalaya, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Vidarbha, South Chhattisgarh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
- Rainfall at many places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands on 9th May.
- Rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands during 10th to 11th May.
- Rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over the Andaman Islands and isolated heavy rainfall over Nicobar Islands on 12th May

- Gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph is likely over southeast and adjoining east central Bay of Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and adjoining Andaman Sea on 10th & 11th May.
- Gale wind speed reaching 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph is likely over east central Bay of Bengal and 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph over Andaman Sea and Andaman Islands on 12th May.
Sea Condition
- Sea condition is likely to be very rough over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea from 9th May onwards. It is likely to be very rough to high over southeast and adjoining east central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea from 10th May onwards till 11th May.
- It is likely to be high to very high over east central Bay of Bengal and very rough to high adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea from 12th May.
Warnings
- Fishermen, small ships, boats and trawlers are advised not to venture into southeast & adjoining central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea from 9th May onwards.
- Those who are over east central Bay of Bengal and north Andaman Sea are advised to return by 9th May.
- Regulation of tourism and offshore activities and shipping near Andaman and Nicobar Islands during 8th - 12th May.
- Regulation of shipping activity over the sea areas of southeast & central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea during 8th -12th May.
