Cyclone Biparjoy: India Ready, Says Amit Shah. 20,000 People Evacuated From Affected Areas—Top Points

Very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy is set to cross Saurashtra & Kutch near Jakhau Port by the evening of June 15.

As Gujarat braces itself to face the impact of impending cyclone Biparjoy, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that all preparations are done and India is prepared to tackle Biparjoy. "The States where nuclear power stations are being set up have been given a strict protocol to be followed in the case of any emergency situation," Amit Shah said.

According to Gujarat government, more than 20,000 people from the affected districts evacuated so far. Migration of 500 people in Junagadh district, 6,786 in Kutch, 1,500 in Jamnagar, 543 people in Porbandar, 4,820 in Dwarka, 408 in Gir-Somnath, 2,000 people in Morbi and 4,031 in Rajkot.

Director General, India Meteorological Department Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that the wind speed is picking up in Porbandar, Devbhoomi Dwarka districts upto Kachchh, to go up to 65-75kmph tomorrow.

  • "On 15th June, wind speed in Dwarka, Jamnagar, Kachchh and Morbi districts of Gujarat will be around 125-135 kmph and gusting to 150 kmph, it could have extensive damaging potential," Mohapatra said, as quoted by ANI.
  • Union minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya visits Bhuj Military Station to review preparedness as cyclone 'Biparjoy' is expected to cross near Gujarat's Jakhau Port by the evening of 15th June.
  • "Till now, 8000 people have been evacuated and moved to safer locations in Kachchh. 1.5- 2 lakh small and big animals moved to higher places," Mandviya said, as quoted by ANI. He added, "All agencies including Govt of India, State govt, IAF, Navy, Coast Guard and Disaster management authorities are working together to minimise the impact of cyclone 'Biparjoy'.
  • According to IMD, the cyclone could lead to extremely heavy rainfall (over 20 cm) at isolated places in Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka and Jamnagar districts on June 15.
  • Rough sea conditions, and strong winds were witnessed in Dwarka. Very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy lay centered at 02:30 IST over the Northeast and adjoining east central Arabian Sea about 290 km southwest of Porbandar & 360 km south-southwest of Jakhau Port is set to cross Saurashtra & Kutch near Jakhau Port by the evening of June 15.
  • High tidal waves were witnessed in Mumbai due to the impact of Cyclone Biparjoy in the Arabian Sea.
  • The Director of Information and Publication Railway Board, Shivaji Sutar on Monday said that sufficient manpower and machinery has been deployed with adequate preparation to deal with any emergency situation.
  • Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey informed about both central and state governments being on alert mode in view of the cyclone.
  • PM Modi also chaired a high-level meeting to review the preparedness of ministries/agencies of the Centre as well as Gujarat to deal with the situation.
  • A total of 67 trains have been cancelled in view of cyclone Biparjoy which is set to make landfall on Thursday in Gujarat, said CPRO Western Railway on Monday.

The North Western Railway (NWR) has cancelled some train services as the cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ is likely to enter southwest Rajasthan on June 16, officials said on Monday. "Keeping in view the safety and security in view of the cyclonic storm Biprajoy in the Bay of Bengal, train services are being cancelled/partially cancelled by the Railways," the NWR said in a statement, as quoted by the news agency PTI.

The Western Railway on Monday short-terminated more than 50 trains heading to coastal areas of Gujarat in view of powerful cyclone 'Biparjoy' and is considering cancellation of several trains over the next three days, a release said. The WR is taking various measures including setting up disaster management rooms, help desks, and keeping relief trains ready.
