Cyclone Biparjoy: High tidal waves, triggered by Cyclone Biparjoy, were witnessed at the Worli Sea Face and Marine Lines in Mumbai ahead of the expected landfall in adjoining Gujarat later today
Visuals of high tide surfaced from both Gujarat and coastal Mumbai as Cyclone Biparjoy is less than 200 kilometres from the Gujarat coast and its impending landfall on Thursday evening. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed that Biparjoy is expected to make landfall near Jakhau port as a “very severe cyclonic storm” with maximum wind speed reaching up to 150 kilometres per hour. The Western Railway has said that 76 trains have been cancelled, 36 short-terminated and 31 short-originated as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers and train operations.

With anticipated heavy rain and storm surge in Gujarat, evacuation of 74,000 people living in vulnerable areas is undertaken, authorities said, as per news agency PTI.
The intensity of rainfall will increase as the powerful weather system approaches the coast, with isolated places in Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka and Jamnagar districts likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall.
“VSCS Biparjoy over Northeast Arabian Sea at 0530 hours IST of 15th June, 2023 about 180km west-southwest of Jakhau Port (Gujarat). To cross Saurashtra & Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi and Karachi near Jakhau Port by evening of 15th June as a VSVS,” IMD said in its latest update on the cyclone.

A total of 33 teams were earmarked by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to undertake relief and rescue operations in Gujarat and Maharashtra ahead of the expected landfall of cyclone 'Biparjoy' near the Jakhau port in Kutch district.
In Maharashtra, out of the total 14 NDRF teams, five have been deployed in Mumbai while the rest have been kept on standby, the officials said, as per PTI.
Each of these teams have about 35-40 personnel and they are equipped with tree and pole cutters, electric saws, inflatable boats and basic medicines and relief items, they said.
