Cyclone Biparjoy: Landfall Expected At Gujarat's Jakhau Port At 6 PM, Nearly 1 Lakh Evacuated — Top Points

The IMD said that the very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy is anticipated to make landfall on the coasts of Saurashtra, Kutch, and adjoining areas of Pakistan in the evening today.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy is anticipated to make landfall on the coasts of Saurashtra, Kutch, and adjoining areas of Pakistan at 6 PM in the evening today. Gujarat administration said it has so far shifted more than 94,000 persons living in eight coastal districts to temporary shelters.

Of the 94,427 persons evacuated so far, nearly 46,800 were evacuated in Kutch district, followed by 10,749 in Devbhumi Dwarka, 9,942 in Jamnagar, 9,243 in Morbi, 6,822 in Rajkot, 4,864 in Junagadh, 4,379 in Porbandar and 1,605 in Gir Somnath district, a Gujarat government release said. The cyclone It is likely to cross Saurashtra and Kutch regions and adjoining Pakistan Coasts.

  • The IMD said the landfall process of the cyclone would begin in the evening and will continue till midnight.
  • The IMD said the cyclone would bring extremely heavy rainfall and cause 'astronomical tide' with a storm surge of 2-3 metres height that could inundate low-lying areas in Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar and Morbi districts during landfall.
  • Officials said 15 teams of he National Disaster Response Force, 12 teams of the State Disaster Response Force as well as personnel of the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, Indian Coast Guard and Border Security Force (BSF) have been deployed for relief and rescue operations.
  • In view of the cyclone causing huge tides, people have been barred from going near the sea, with lifeguards being deployed at all beaches, the officials further said.
  • The Western Railway on Wednesday decided to cancel or short- terminate the operation of a few more trains as a precaution in view of the powerful cyclone.
  • The Western Railway said seven more trains have been cancelled, three short-terminated and four other services short-originated in view of safety of passengers and train operations as the cyclone approaches the Gujarat coast.
  • The cyclone is less than 200 kilometres from the Gujarat coast.
  • Gujarat administration has shifted more than 74,000 people living near the coast as a precaution and deployed disaster management units for rescue and relief measures.
  • Finance Minister Niramala Sitharaman on Wednesday chaired a meeting of managing directors of public sector banks and insurance companies to review their preparedness in view of cyclone 'Biparjoy'.

Seventeen SDRF teams have been deployed in Rajasthan to deal with the impact of very severe cyclone Biparjoy which is expected to make landfall on the Gujarat coast Thursday, a top official said on Wednesday. A meteorological department official said in the meeting that under the impact of Cyclone Biparjoy, a deep depression will hit Jalore and Barmer on June 16, bringing heavy rains and thunderstorms with wind speeds up to 50 to 60 km per hour.
