India logged a total of 743 infections on Saturday with the total number of active cases at 3,997, as per the data published by the Union health ministry. In a span of 24 hours, seven new fatalities three from Kerala, two from Karnataka and one each from Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu were reported, according to the data published at 8 am. 

Till December 5, the number of coronavirus cases in the country were in double digits but witnessed a rise again amid cold weather conditions and after the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant.

The infections were at its peak and being reported in lakhs after the pandemic began in early 2020. Over 4.5 crore people have been infected with the virus while more than 5.3 lakh people have succumbed to the virus across the country in four years. 

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease stands at over 4.4 crore with a national recovery rate of 98.81 per cent, according to the ministry's website.

As per the health ministry's website, 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered so far in the country.

On Friday, the country reported a total of 162 cases of Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 with Kerala recording the highest number at 83, followed by Gujarat 34, according to the INSACOG's data updated on Friday.

The states which have been witnessing the increasing number of infections with the new variant include: Kerala (83), Gujarat (34), Goa (18), Karnataka (eight), Maharashtra (seven), Rajasthan (five), Tamil Nadu (four), Telangana (two) and Delhi (one), according to the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).

As per INSACOG's data, 145 cases of Covid-19 reported in December had the presence of JN.1, while 17 such cases were detected in November.

The variant has been classified as a separate "variant of interest" given its rapidly-increasing spread, but said it poses a "low" global public health risk.

Amid Covid Surge, 2 Fresh Cases Reported In Uttarakhand

Two fresh COVID-19 cases were recorded in Uttarakhand over the weekend, officials said on Monday.

A 77-year-old man tested positive for COVID-19 at Max Hospital on Saturday and a 72-year-old woman tested positive at Doon Hospital on Sunday, Health Secretary Rajesh Kumar said.

Gurugram Reports First Covid Death In 6 Months

A 47-year-old woman infected with coronavirus died on Sunday, the first Covid death in the district in about six months, an official said.

The woman, who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital for six days, was also suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure and other health issues, he said.

Meanwhile, two fresh COVID-19 cases were reported in Gurugram on Monday, the health department said.

Two Covid-19 Cases Detected In Indore, Active Cases Reach 9

Two COVID-19 cases were detected in Indore in Madhya Pradesh, which took the number of active cases in the state’s commercial capital to nine, an official said on Monday.

A 75-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were detected with the infection and both are in home isolation with mild symptoms, said Amit Malakar, nodal officer of the district unit of Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).

196 Covid Sub-Variant JN.1 Cases Detected In India So Far, Kerala Tops With 83

A total of 196 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been detected in the country so far, with Odisha joining the list of states that have detected the presence of the variant, according to the INSACOG's data updated on Monday. Ten states and Union territories have so far detected the presence of the JN.1 sub-variant of the virus. These states are Kerala (83), Goa (51), Gujarat (34), Karnataka (eight), Maharashtra (seven), Rajasthan (five), Tamil Nadu (four), Telangana (two) Odisha (one) and Delhi (one), according to the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).
