Coronavirus Cases HIGHLIGHTS: India has recorded a massive surge of 1,31,968 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. With this, India's tally now stands at 13,057,954, Worldometer showed this morning. Active cases are nearing the 1-million mark. India is now the 4th-worst-hit country in terms of active cases. India also witnessed a grim record of most fatalities due to covid-19 in a single day in 2021, which stood at 802. The death toll from the deadly infection stands at 167,694.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called for a four-day festival for coronavirus vaccination even as many states are reporting a shortage of vaccines. He added that imposing a night curfew is important to tackle the rising cases.
“The world has also accepted the night curfew,” the prime minister said. “Curfew makes people remember that they are living in the age of corona. It is good that we promote night curfew as ‘corona curfew’. This will not affect work too much.”
The discussion on the shortage of vaccine has created an uproar in the country and After many states complained about Covid-19 vaccine shortage amidst a huge jump in the number of coronavirus infections, the Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Thursday assures that the country has more than 43 million COVID-19 vaccine doses in stock or in the pipeline.
After over 40 doctors, including the vice-chancellor, tested positive in Lucknow’s King George’s Medical University (KGMU), as many as 37 medical staff of Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital are reportedly infected too.

Ahead of the weekend lockdown in Maharashtra, BMC commissioner Iqbal Chahal said that the vaccination drive will continue to take place in all Government and BMC centres of Mumbai tomorrow and the day after.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik in a message said: "The second wave of COVD19 has started, this is why lockdowns and night curfews have been imposed in many states of the country, but if we follow the COVID rules properly we can avoid situations like lockdowns in the state."
