Coronavirus: Total Cases In India Cross 2 Lakh With Highest Ever Single-Day Spike
With 8,909 new cases, India's coronavirus count has surged past 2-lakh mark. India is the seventh most affected country in the world in terms of infection spread.
New Delhi: India witnessed the highest ever single day spike in the number of Coronavirus cases on Wednesday, taking the total count of cases in India beyond the 2-lakh border. The daily increase figure in count of positive cases continued to be beyond 8,000 for the fourth straight day since Sunday. As per the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India reported as many as 8,909 new cases and 217 deaths in the last 24 hours. Total number of cases in the country is now at 207,615 including 101,497 active cases, 100,303 cured/discharged/migrated cases and 5,815 deaths.
However, Union Health Ministry has asserted that the recovery rate is constantly improving while the fatality rate is declining. In a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Joint Secretary Lav Agrawal said that India's fatality rate is one of the lowest in the world. "A total of 95,552 patients have recovered from the contagious disease. The recovery rate of corona patients in the nation is continuously improving and stands at 48.07 per cent now, up from 11.42 per cent on April 15," Agrawal said.

India is currently at the seventh position in the world in terms of infection spread, surpassing countries like Germany and Iran. It is now right behind Italy in the list. United States continue to be the worst-ravaged country with over 1.8 million cases and 108,059 deaths so far. Brazil , Russia, Spain, UK and Italy succeed US in this regard.
