Coronavirus Cases In India Inch Towards 3.5 Lakhs, Maharashtra Records Highest Number Of Deaths In 24 Hrs

Maharashtra, Delhi and Tamil Nadu continue to contribute 56-58% of the national caseload in the country

New Delhi: With the daily surge of over 10,000 cases India's total number of coronavirus cases mounted to 3,43,091 on Tuesday. According to the Health Ministry, the number of active cases in India now stands at 1,53,178 while 9900 people have succumbed to the virus. Also Read| Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain Admitted To Hospital After High Fever, Breathing Trouble; Covid-19 Test Result Expected Today The country recorded 380 deaths in the past 24 hrs while the number of COVID-19 recoveries registered across the nation was 1,80,013 since the outbreak, taking the recovery rate in India to 52.5 percent.

Worst Affected States

Maharashtra reported 178 more deaths, the highest spike in a single day, taking the number of fatalities to 4,128. With 2,786 new detections, the total number of cases in the state jumped to 1,10,744. The national capital has 25,002 active cases while the number of fatalities has reached 1400. Due to the daily surge in Coronavirus cases Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal followed by an all-party meet and announced that 18000 samples will be tested every day in Delhi from 20th June. The Home Ministry has also waived off the testing charges by 50%. In a recent development, Delhi Health Satyendra Jain has been hospitalized due to complaints of high fever and sudden drop in oxygen levels. As per inputs received, he has undergone a test for Covid-19 , the result for which is expected today. With 20,681 active cases in the state, the Tamil Nadu government announced a complete lockdown for Chennai and its suburbs from June 19-30 when only essential services would be allowed. The decision followed suggestions from an expert panel on scaling down lockdown relaxations to check the spread of the virus in the state. States like Assam, Bihar, Himachal, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, West Bengal recorded more recoveries than new cases.

Global Status

India ranks 138 in the world in tests per million population and the testing rate is over 4000 tests per million now. India is the fourth worst-affected country by the pandemic after the US, Brazil and Russia. All four countries have more than three lakh cases.
