What is the significance of Constitution Day?
The day is also known as National Law Day, and marks the adoption of the Constitution in India. The day also commemorates the pledge of Purna Swaraj, passed in the Lahore session of the Congress in 1930.
The Constitution of India has laid down the concept of fundamental rights, political structures, procedures, powers, duties of government institutions, directive principles besides the duties of citizens.
The government and citizens adhere to the Constitution of India, the most important legal document also cited at the time of any dispute.
The Constitution of India is the longest written constitution by B R Ambedkar, who was the chairman of the drafting committee.
Why is BR Ambedkar remembered on this day?
Through this day the nation pays tribute to India’s first Law Minister BR Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Constitution. Born on 14 April, 1891, Ambedkar is known as the father of the Indian Constitution.
This day is celebrated to honour the day when the constitution was formally adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India in 1949. It replaced the Government of India Act of 1935.
However, the official celebration of this day came into effect in the year 2015, when the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment notified the decision of the government to celebrate the day to promote constitution values among citizens.
The Constitution Day reminds the citizens of its values and the belief this nation stands for collectively as a democratic, republic, socialist and secular country.
