'Absurd And Preposterous': Congress MP On China's New Map Claiming Arunachal, Aksai Chin Area

Congress has lashed out at China for claiming entire Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin in its new map and called it 'absurd' and 'preposterous'.

Congress leader Manish Tewari on Tuesday slammed China for its new map claiming the entire Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin area. The MP said that it is 'preposterous' and is not in sync with the history of the Sino-India border dispute. Tewari said that the real issue between the two countries is that the Chinese have transgressed along the LAC at multiple points on a theatre level. He urged the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre to see if it would be appropriate to befit Chinese President Xi Jinping during the G20 Summit in Delhi who is "in illegal occupation of 2000 square kilometres of Indian territory".

He said: "The absurdity & preposterousness of the Chinese claim is evidenced by the history of the Sino-Indian border dispute...Today, the real issue between India & China is that the Chinese have transgressed along the LAC at multiple points on a theatre level..."

"Under those circumstances, the Govt should seriously introspect whether it would be in accordance with India's self-respect to befitting a person in Delhi - Xi Jinping - who is in illegal occupation of 2000 square kilometres of Indian territory along the LAC. That is what needs to be vacated...To sum it up, the Chinese maps are preposterous, they are not in sync with the history of the Sino-India border dispute, China has no claim on Arunachal Pradesh..," Tewari added.

China Releases New 'Standard Map' Showing Territorial Claims

Congress's remarks come a day after China officially released the 2023 edition of its "standard map" incorporating the disputed areas including its claims over Arunachal Pradesh, Aksai Chin region, Taiwan and the disputed South China Sea, reported PTI.

"The 2023 edition of China's standard map was officially released on Monday and launched on the website of the standard map service hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources," state-run Global Times said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

"This map is compiled based on the drawing method of the national boundaries of China and various countries in the world," it added.

The map displayed by the Global Times showed Arunachal Pradesh, which China claims as South Tibet, and Aksai Chin occupied by it in the 1962 war.

Notably, India has time and again communicated to China that Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India.

Apart from this, the map also incorporated China's claims over the estranged island of Taiwan and the nine-dash line claiming a large part of the South China Sea. China has always claimed Taiwan as part of its mainland and its integration with the mainland is part of a vowed objective of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
