Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi Arrives At PM Modi's Office: What We Know So Far

Reports said that Rahul Gandhi arrived at the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Office over the appointment of next Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday reached Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Office in the national capital for a meeting over the selection of the next director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Shortly after Rahul Gandhi arrived at PM Modi's office on Monday evening, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna also reached the PMO for the crucial meeting.

The appointment of the CBI director is done by the central government on the recommendation of a three-member appointment committee, which is headed by the Prime Minister and comprises of the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India.

Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Praveen Sood, who is serving as the CBI director, is set to resign on May 25. 

The Karnataka cadre officer was appointed in May 2023 for a period of two years from the date of taking charge. The 1986-batch IPS officer was director general of police (DGP) of the Karnataka before his appointment. He took over as the director of the premier investigative agency on May 25, 2023.

As per the Supreme Court directions in 2019, no officer with less than a tenure of six months remaining can be considered for the post of CBI Director. The apex court also said that the tenure of the director can not be less than 2 years and can be transferred only with the consent of the appointing committee.
