Rain Brings Respite From Heat In Chennai, Nearby Districts; IMD Forecasts More Showers Across Tamil Nadu

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), moderate thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and steady rain are expected to continue until noon on April 16, 2025.

Chennai and nearby districts experienced mild to moderate rainfall starting Wednesday morning offering much-needed relief from the recent heatwave-like conditions.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), moderate thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and steady rain are expected to continue. Areas likely to be affected include Thiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu.

Further, it has predicted thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by moderate to heavy rain will continue in Chennai on Wednesday. Additionally, light rain is likely in some areas on Thursday (April 17). 

It said that Chennai will experience a maximum temperature of 36-37°C and a minimum temperature of around 29°C.

The IMD also issued a weather advisory, cautioning residents about possible waterlogging and slippery roads in some localities, which could lead to disruptions in traffic flow.

The IMD bulletin on Wednesday said, "Rainfall occurred at isolated places over Tamilnadu (at isolated places over South Tamilnadu & North Interior Tamilnadu). Dry weather prevailed over North coastal Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area."

Tamil Nadu Weather Update 

Additionally, showers have been forecast for other parts of Tamil Nadu, including Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Virudhunagar, and Ramanathapuram. These regions may experience light to moderate rainfall along with thunder and lightning.

On Tuesday, IMD said that Erode recorded the highest maximum temperature of 38.6°C over Tamil Nadu while Karur Paramathi recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 16.5°C in the plains of Tamil Nadu.

Overall, maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal remained near normal. The recorded ranges were: North Interior Tamil Nadu (plains): 35–38°C, South Interior Tamil Nadu (plains): Around 37°C, Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal: 33–36°C and Hilly areas: 22–29°C.

Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.
