BJP’s Sarabjit Kaur Wins Chandigarh Mayor Election 2022, Defeats AAP With Close Margin

The mayoral race received 28 votes in the 36-member assembly chamber. Seven Congress councillors and one SAD councillor were missing from the meeting.

New Delhi: Sarabjit Kaur of the Bharatiya Janata Party narrowly defeated Anju Katyal of the Aam Aadmi Party to become Chandigarh's new mayor when the election results were announced today.

The mayoral race received 28 votes in the 36-member assembly chamber. Seven Congress councillors and one SAD councillor were missing from the meeting. The presiding officer gave the BJP 14 votes, the AAP 13 votes, and one vote was ruled invalid.

Meanwhile, after the BJP's win was confirmed, Aam Aadmi Party councillors protested outside the Assembly Hall of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, causing a disturbance between the two parties. They claim that the presiding officer is biased since he is a BJP councillor.

Who Is Sarabjit Kaur Dhillon?

Sarabjit Kaur Dhillon, a ward number 6 councillor, is married to Jagtar Singh Dhillon, a previous councillor who lives in Mani Majra. She completed her studies till the second year of her bachelor's degree. After her husband's ward was designated for a female candidate, she entered politics.

This is the first time in the previous five years that no obvious winner could be projected in a mayoral election.
