Breaking News LIVE: India Administers Over 57 Lakh Covid Vaccines Till 7 PM, Accumulative Count Crosses 76 Cr Mark

Background

Breaking News LIVE Updates September 15, 2021: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will on Wednesday chair the 81st All India Presiding Officers' Conference (AIPOC) via video-conferencing. According to an official statement, the conference will deliberate on the ‘Role of Legislature in fostering effective and meaningful democracy’. Notably, the summit comes in the backdrop of the International Day of Democracy, which is observed on September 15 every year.

The latest coronavirus wave in the United States driven by the Delta variant could soon peak, but experts warn against complacency and expect the virus will be part of everyday life for years to come, reports AFP.

The seven-day-average of daily cases as of Monday was 172,000, its highest level of this surge even as the growth rate is slowing and cases are headed down in most states, according to data compiled by the Covid Act Now tracker.

But more than 1,800 people are still dying a day, and over 100,000 remain hospitalized with severe Covid -- a grim reminder of the challenges authorities have faced in getting enough Americans vaccinated in the face of misinformation and a polarized political climate.

The Madras High Court has set aside a notification of the central government, fixing 120 kilometres/hour as the speed limit for vehicles running on highways.

A division bench of Justices N Kirubakaran (since retired) and Justice TV Thamilselvi, which quashed the notification dated April 6, 2018, recently, also directed the Centre and the State to issue fresh notifications with decreased speed limit.

Originally, while passing interim orders on an appeal on March 3 this year, the bench increased the compensation amount from ₹ 18.43 lakh to ₹ 1.50 crore to the appellant -- a dentist, who had suffered 90 per cent disability due to a road accident that occurred in April 2013 in Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu.
