Mahapanchayat Will Be Held Regularly To Discuss Farmers’ Issues: BKU Leader Rakesh Tikait

Tikait added that “Every year, a 10-day Kisan Andolan Mela will be held. Mahapanchayat will be held from time to time to discuss farmers' issues.”

New Delhi: Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait said on Saturday that a Mahapanchayat will be held from time to time to discuss farmer issues. The statement has come as the farmers are going back to their homes after a year-long protest and vacating the Delhi borders.

Tikait added that “every year, a 10-day Kisan Andolan Mela will be held. Mahapanchayat will be held from time to time to discuss farmers' issues.” He also lauded the support from the media, especially social media in highlighting the cause of farmers.

The farmers’ protest had been going on at the borders of Delhi since November 26, 2020. It came to an end on Thursday when the farmers received a formal letter from the central government which promised to form a committee for minimum support price (MSP) and to take back all the cases against them.

The farmers will hold a review meeting on January 15, 2022. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha said in a statement that “if the government does not fulfill its promises, we could resume our agitation.”

The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha had passed the Farm Laws Repeal Bill on November 29, the first day of the winter session after the Prime Minister announced it on November 19. The Bill was later passed by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.

The farmers had started protesting against three farm laws: The Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act; The Farmers' (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act; and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act.
